Alaska Fly fishing in October is the “ Monster Month” on the Kenai River

Novice to Experts Welcomed
October is one of the best months to catch Trophy Sized Rainbows and Drifters Lodge is here to help make it happen.  Few guides are left on the river so most of the day you will be fishing in solitude with the eagles, ducks, swans, bears, moose and other native Alaskan wildlife.  The fall colors are diminishing but the scenery is still phenomenal, snow is normally  included in the landscape.  October brings greater chances of bear sightings on the banks of the river.  It is their last chance to fatten up before winter hibernation.

Be it Trophy Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, Silver Salmon and Dolly Varden, October is an remarkable time for fishing.  Although the fishing is not fast and furious, it is exhilarating. When you have a fish on, most likely it will be a fish of a lifetime.

Welcome to October fishing on the Kenai River. The weather is fine if you like cold crisp days, some snow, and sunshine or possibly it could be snowing sideways.

Drifters Lodge package deals include a full day of guided fishing on the Kenai River for Coho salmon, trophy class Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. Deep Creek, Anchor River, Kasilof River and Ninilchik River also offer some of the best steelhead fishing in Alaskan waters.

First class cabins (prices are based on double occupancy) including a continental breakfast and hearty lunch are provided.  Licenses are included along with some of the best quality fly fishing gear and tackle in the industry.  You are welcome to bring your own fly fishing gear and tackle but the tackle and techniques are fairly specific for the Kenai River. Please feel free to ask our guides about your gear.  The fish do not feed on the typical bugs found on and in the river.  Guides also offer spin fishing with the same techniques for non fly fishermen. The guides are expertly knowledgeable of where the fish are at this time of year. Typically, the guides provide transportation to and from the river although renting a vehicle is recommended to go out to dinner and sightseeing.   One extra day of lodging is included at no additional charge due to the ever changing weather conditions. Although the guide will go out in most any weather, sometimes the conditions in early winter can be a little harsh rendering a change in fishing strategies for the day.

Guided trips for steelhead, rainbow trout, and dolly varden on the Kenai River and four other peninsula rivers are popular excursions among locals. Why? Because it is arguably the best fishing of the year. If you are looking for a truly unique Alaska fishing experience, take the advice of our expert guides (and what many locals already know) and plan your ultimate fishing vacation in the month of October. Weather can often be too extreme to be on a boat but that only means decent wade fishing for steelhead and other Alaska fish.

Things you will definitely need for the October Alaska fishing trip are warm cloths, rain gear, chest waders (if possible), hat and gloves.  We have hip waders here at the lodge but chest waders are much warmer and drier on cold rainy days.  Nightly campfires at the rivers edge and the Swedish sauna with its big picture window are welcome amenities after a great day on the water.  October is the best time to join our “30 Inch Plus Club” and if you make it into it you will receive a certificate along with a picture on our wall of fame and a t-shirt commemorating the event.

Tight lines to everyone. Fly Fishing Lessons Available, as always, for novice and experienced anglers looking to improve their Alaska adventure in October.
